Tire plan

Tire plan

Kudos to Ms. Bobby Jean Leithead Todd for the decision to accept old worn tires at transfer stations throughout the island.

The response to the dengue fever outbreak will result in the disposition of many mosquito breeding sights. It will also go a long way toward ridding the island of this unsightly and dangerous debris.

The disposal of used tires has long been a thorn in the side of Hawaii Islanders.

One permanent solution that might be considered is a deposit charged for all new tires purchased in the county. A deposit fee could be assessed of $10 for each tire purchased, including those on new vehicles, with a return of $5 for each tire turned in. A program similar to the deposit on glass, metal and plastic containers would rid the island of many or most of the unwanted tires, as well as assigning them to be recycled at mainland facilities.

The $5 “overage” on each tire collected would cover the county’s costs of handling and shipping the unwanted tires to the mainland.

Shame of Gabbard

I was shocked and disappointed to read in the Tribune-Herald that U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard voted for HR 4038, which would require further screening of refugees from Syria and Iraq by the FBI.

She is siding with the racist fear-mongers, in this case. Refugees are already screened rigorously, as I am sure she is aware. There have been ZERO acts of terrorism by refugees in the U.S. during the 14 years since 9/11.

There is no reason to put these poor people through any more discomfort and humiliation than they already have endured and will continue to endure in their rough, uncertain futures, including the 18- to 36-month process of gaining the immigration status called “Refugee” in the U.S.

Shame on you, Rep. Gabbard.
